Gutierrez, a native of Chicago, IL, attended Illinois School for the Deaf where he played basketball. Gutierrez finished his high school career in 2nd place on ISD's all-time high school scoring list with 1,416 career points and 1st place on ISD's all-time high school rebounding with 885 career rebounds after only three years of playing on the varsity basketball team. After Gutierrez graduated ISD, he then went on to play college basketball at Gallaudet University from 1997-1999. While at Gallaudet University, Gutierrez played for John Becker, who is currently the Head Coach of the men's basketball coach team at Vermont University.
Gutierrez's high school coaching career began in 2010 when he became an assistant at New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe, NM. In 2018, Gutierrez was the acting head coach of the Roadrunners, where he served from 2010-present. He briefly left coaching to pursue a bachelor's degree in Business administration at New Mexico Highlands University. However, in 2017, Head Coach Letty Perez asked Gutierrez to return to coaching at NMSD as an assistant coach under her. While at NMSD, he helped coach with Perez and both guided the team to a 42-11 record, which included a 20-5 mark and first-ever NMAA State Tournament appearance in 2017-18 and 22-6, also breaking the record in school history for 22-win mark and appearance the NMAA state tournament. During 2018-19 season, he helped lead coach Perez and the Roadrunners to a 22-6 wins and advanced to the Elite 8 at the NMAA State tournament. After this success , Gutierrez was named head coach on October 28, 2019, and Gutierrez also began his college career at Northern New Mexico College as an assistant coach.

Gutierrez earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from New Mexico Highlands University in 2017. Gutierrez resides in Santa Fe, NM, with his lovely wife, Maribeth Schneider, and their four furries Moxy, Samba, Obie, and Kimo.
