ESPANOLA, N.M. - The Northern New Mexico men's and women's basketball squads are heading to the California Pacific Conference tournament this weekend in Vallejo, Calif.
The men's team (8-11, 3-1 CPC) earned the #2 seed and the other bye to the semis, based on winning three-of-four league games in Arizona over Westcliff, Stanton, and Pacific Union. The Eagles' overall RPI is second-best in the conference.
The Eagles will face the winner of#3 Cal Maritime Academy and #6 Pacific Union which will be played on February 27.
The women's team (10-11, 2-1 CPC) earned the #3 seed in the five-team field and will play in the semifinals against #2 seeded Cal Maritime Academy. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. PST on March 1 in Vallejo.
Due to geographic and scheduling constraints, the two teams did not meet in the regular season, and this is the first – and possibly last - meeting between the institutions. NNMC joined the Cal Pac this season while Cal Maritime, a Cal Pac charter member since 1995, is ending varsity sports at the end of this academic year.
